The seminar was realized as the first activity within the project “Hate Crimes Moot Court for Young Lawyers of Southwestern Serbia” implemented by the CSO Monitor from Novi Pazar with the financial support of the United States Embassy in Serbia from September 2019 until February 2020.
25 young lawyers attended this seminar, and in the coming period they will use the acquired knowledge from this seminar to simulate the trial of 5 different cases of hate crime, with the help of their mentors (professors of law faculties, prosecution, court and attorneys).
Lecturers at the seminar were: Jelena Jokanovic, Program Advisor, OSCE Mission to Serbia, who delivered a lecture on “Hate Crime – A Concept and International Legal Framework”; Dr Jasmina Kiurski, Deputy of Public Prosecutor, who delivered a lecture on the topic: “National legislation on hate crimes – substantive aspects”. Tamara Mirović, Deputy Public of Prosecutor, who delivered a lecture on the topic: “National legislation on hate crimes – procedural aspects”. Doc. Dr. Aladin Šemović, Attorney at Law from Novi Pazar, who gave a lecture: “Presentation of the role of the lawyer in criminal proceedings”; Adnan Baćićanin, Deputy of Higher Public Prosecutor in Novi Pazar, who gave a lecture on the topic: “Presentation of the role of the public prosecution in criminal proceedings”; Azra Fetahovic, Judicial Assistant at the Higher Court in Novi Pazar, who gave a lecture on: “Presentation of the role of the court in criminal proceedings”; and prof. Prof. Emir Ćorović, PhD, Associate Professor of the Department of Legal Sciences, State University of Novi Pazar, who gave a lecture on the topic: “Distinction between hate crimes, hate speech and discrimination”.
